Brief History/Information
Alabama became the 22nd U.S. state on December 14, 1819, with Montgomery. Spanish explorers came in the 1500s, and French colonists built the first permanent settlement at Mobile in 1702. Alabama left the Union in January 1861 and joined the Confederate States of America. Montgomery served as the first capital of the Confederacy. In the 1950s and 1960s, Alabama was the center of major fights for racial equality. Key moments included the Montgomery bus boycott, the Freedom Rides, and the march from Selma to Montgomery.
What we did
Mobile, April 1997
Drove to Mobile. Stayed at Holiday Inn Express and went to Colonial Fort Condi, then went to Dauphin Island, it’s like going to Key West., very nice. Ate lunch at the Seafood Galley. Walked around the sand Dunes then went to Fort Gaines…a famous Civil War Fort that was actually involved in the battle of Mobile “damn the torpedos, full steam ahead”. Went back to hotel and did a walking tour of downtown. Went to Port City Brewry, saw old houses, downtown is very dead with lots of oppoturnies for growth. Had dinner at an Italian restaurant called Trattoria on Broad. Very excellent food.
