Brief History/Information
Cancún is located on the northeast coast of the Yucatán Peninsula in Quintana Roo, Mexico. Before becoming a popular vacation destination, the area was part of the ancient Maya civilization. In 1969, the Bank of Mexico and government planners used early computer technology to target the barrier island for a massive tourism project. Private investors hesitated to invest in the rebuilding/rebranding, so the government funded the first wave of hotels, which opened alongside the international airport in 1974.
What we did
We stayed at the Krystal Grand Cancún it’s on the hotel side of Cancun, which is an 18 mile stretch of beach with hundreds of hotels, it is a very American. We ate at a Brazilian restaurant called Ipanema it is located inside the Hard Rock Hotel Cancun.
We took a little cruise ride to Isla Mujeres. Isla Mujeres is an island in the Caribbean Sea, off the coast of Cancún. It’s famous for its white-sand beaches—such as Playa Norte—its crystal-clear waters, and its coral reef, which is ideal for diving. On our cruise, was all you can eat breakfast, lunch, and beverages (even top shelf liquor). We rented snorkel equipment, we went to Pirates land where we saw a dolphin show and ate an all you can eat buffet lunch. The last stop was shopping in downtown Isla Mujeres.
We had breakfast at La Cabaña Santa Fe, a little outdoor café, different colored chairs and sombreros hanging on the roof, good food.
We boarded a bus to make the 2 1/2 hour trip to Chichén Itzá to see the Mayan ruins. Our tour guide took us to the freshwater, sun out, observation, tower, church, El Castillo, and all court. Court is where they used to play basketball games where the winner got beheaded. We climbed about 20 steps on the El Castillo castle.
