Brief History/Information

Mississippi is the 20th U.S. state, admitted to the Union on December 10, 1817, and is located in the southeastern Deep South. Spanish explorer Alonso Alvarez de Pineda mapped the coast in 1519, and French explorers claimed the region later. Mississippi seceded from the Union in January 1861 as a Confederate state. The pivotal Siege of Vicksburg in 1863 gave the Union control of the Mississippi River. The state was readmitted to the Union in 1870. It is home to renowned writers including William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, Tennessee Williams, and Richard Wright.

What we did

Biloxi, April 1997

Drove to Biloxi. The scenery is nice, all beach and tacky casinos.  Ate lunch at CG’s Po Boys Restuarant. Very good. Menu claim is ‘the shrimp Po Boys more shrimp falls off than most estaurant put on, so we tried it and they were right! Went to a local pub called Huckster Cove.  Went to Gulf Coast Winery in Gulfport and tasted different wines, all wines in Mississippi are made with Muscadine grapes.  Went to Bay St. Louis, about 30 minutes right on the bay, lots of shops and pubs, cute little town. We went to a pub called Fire Dog, open 24 hours. The bartender came over with a bucket of blackberries that she had just picked from outside. We then went to the Good life Pub right on the water overlooking a bridge that trains go over. Then walked to Dock of the Bay Bar (owned by the lead singer of Blood, Sweat & Tears).  We then went to Pass Christian and went to The Chimney Bar, then went to Hammerheads Bar.  Left and went to a city named Guatier to eat at Huckster Cove, recommended by a waitress. It’s very local and very cool and good… they didn’t serve food that day so we had beer. Ate at Fisherman’s Harbor by a dock of shrimp boats, very good.
