Delos Brief History/Information (UNESCO World Heritage Site)

Delos is one of the most atmospheric sites in Greece—like stepping into a living ancient city. You can only get to Delos by boat, and no overnight stays are allowed. It is an uninhabited island and it is still one of the most extensive archaeological sites in Greece.

Delos has a lot of Greek mythology tied to it:

  • It’s the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis

  • It is where Leto gave birth to Apollo and Artemis

    • And Delos became sacred ground, and for centuries, with no births or deaths being allowed on the island. Expectant mothers and the dying were taken to nearby island ‘Rhenia’.

What we did

We took a ferry to Delos and met our tour guide booked through Zas Travel. He was a very good and informative guide, who knew so much about the history and culture of the island as well as Greek Mythology. We had to rush through the museum and couldn’t hike to the top. There was not nearly enough time on this fabulous island for us.

Places of Interest

  • Temple of Apollo

  • Sacred Lake (drained for health reasons)

  • Terrace of the Lions: Iconic row of marble lions dedicated by the people of Naxos (7th century BCE)

  • House of the Dolphins, House of Dionysus: Wealthy homes with exquisite mosaics

  • Agora of the Italians: Huge commercial square used by Roman traders

  • Sanctuary of the Egyptian gods

  • Stadium & Gymnasium

Mykonos

Mykonos Brief History/Information

Mykonos was named after Mykonos, the son of the god Apollo.  It was also said to be the site of the battle between Heracles (Hercules) and the Giants, whose petrified bodies became the rocks of the island.

Mykonos is one of the most popular of the Greek Cyclades islands. It’s known for its beautiful beaches, iconic windmills, white-washed architecture, and vibrant nightlife.

What we did

We arrived to Mykonos via ferry after visiting Delos. We found the shops extremely touristy and very crowded with tourists. Yes, there are tourists all over Greece, but for such a small island, there were a lot people.
