Brief History/Information

Santorini’s crescent shape was formed by intense volcanic activity. The island is part of the Hellenic Volcanic Arc, one of Europe’s most active volcanic regions. Its named “Santorini” after Saint Irene. Santorini joined the modern Greek state after the Greek War of Independence (1821–1830).

The ‘cave houses’ are carved into volcanic rock, whitewashed for heat control and blue domes symbolize the Greek flag.

What we did

We booked a high-speed ferry with SeaJets from Crete to Santorini first thing in the morning. We had a tour of Santorini booked through Tours by Locals, with our tour guide ‘Yiannis‘; he picked us up from the ferry and drove us all around. Some of the highlights we went to were Oia, A must-see for anyone visiting the Santorini; Perivolos Beach, known for its black sand beach; Ancient Akrotiri, An ancient city that was covered in volcanic ash; and Mt Profitis Ilias, The island's highest peak. This was a good tour, we got a chance to see the whole island in one day and not have to drive, park, or fight any crowds (yes, there were many people in Santorini the end of September).

We booked our room for the night with the beautiful Asteras Villas in the Fira area. This place was awesome! They only have a few rooms, it’s located in a quiet but walkable area, every room has an amazing view and a hot tub. We finished our night with dinner at The Athenian House in the Imerovigli area. We made dinner with sunset and caldera view reservations a year in advance and very well worth it. Be careful! Once the sun sets-it’s chilly!
