Brief History/Information Santorini’s crescent shape was formed by intense volcanic activity. The island is part of the Hellenic Volcanic Arc, one of Europe’s most active volcanic regions. Its named “Santorini” after Saint Irene . Santorini joined the modern Greek state after the Greek War of Independence (1821–1830).
