What we did
We rented a car at the Thessaloniki airport and had a wonderful 28 mile day trip chock full of ruins and history. We chose to do this day trip on our way to Litochoro & Mount Olympus.
Discovering Alexander the Great road trip from Thessaloniki
Drive to Pella where Alexander the Great was born. This is pretty incredible. Why? Because it’s very well preserved and you can just ‘see’ how it was all layed out.
We were going to drive to the Archaeological Site of Ancient Mieza, where the remains of the ancient city of Mieza was, but we ran out of time.
After Mieza we then went to Vergina; one of the royal tombs is identified as that of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. You can see the tomb and many artifacts (it’s all indoor too!).
Lastly, we almost drove to Dion Archaeological Park, but decided that we needed to get to Litochoro. This is the City of Zeus and can show you how ancient Greeks lived, prospered and worshipped their gods.
