Brief History/Information
Nafplio is beautiful and has some great history. It’s located in the Peloponnese region, about 2 hours from Athens, and sits on the Argolic Gulf. The Venetians took control and strengthened the town’s defenses, including the construction of Acronafplia Fortress and later Palamidi Fortress (completed in 1714). Nafplio was the first capital of independent Greece (1823–1834).
What we did & Places of Interest
We stayed at a beautiful hotel right on Syntagma Square in Nafplio, Castellano Hotel & Suites. So convenient to everywhere in the town.
Day 1: We left Athens and drove to Nafplio, with a few stops in between.
Corinth Canal - beautiful spot! Very high and amazing.
Acrocorinth - “Acro” means high up. This is a cool fortress. Have your hiking shoes and walking sticks. The rocks are very worn and slippery. Free entry, opens at 8:30am.
Lunch at Sofos, Dervenakion, Nemea 205 00, Greece - This was an amazing find! Don’t let the emptiness of the restaurant fool you… it was absolutely delicious and the service was impeccable.
Ancient Nemea - There are 45 wineries in this area, and many require reservations. We went to Domaine Skouras (we called about an hour in advance and they were able to take us). What a great and beautiful winery. The tour was very informative and the tour guide was amazing.
Day 2: UNESCO World Heritage Site Explore Mycena, Epidaurus, and Palamidi
Mycenea - Archaeological Sites of Mycenae and Tiryns. Free parking at the site, be prepared for lots of tours and busses and people! Enter through the lion gates of the House of Atreus,
Epidaurus - the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus and the Sanctuary of Aesclepius. The acoustics of this theater are said to be perfect. So we thought we’d give the acoustics a try and sang a song (see video below). After our song was done, we received two things: 1. A standing ovation from the people enjoying the ancient theatre and 2. A stern talking to by the guard, telling us that singing isn’t allowed in the theatre (we don’t know why). This is an easy drive on well paved national roads.
Palamidi - once back in Nafplio and feeling energetic, it’s time to climb to the top of Palamidi, an 18th-century Venetian fortress that overlooks the town and is reached by a legendary 999 steps. Those less energetic can drive up on a road that starts just to the east of the town.
